Home Tuition Singapore FAQs for Parents and Students
Parents often have questions when arranging extra academic support for their children. This FAQ page answers common questions about finding and working with a trusted home tutor in Singapore.
How can parents request a home tutor in Singapore?
Genius Mind provides multiple convenient and flexible methods for you to request a home tutor. You can call or WhatsApp us to get an ideal candidate, or fill in a simple tutor request form for us.
Once we receive your request, our coordinators will review your requirements and begin matching suitable tutors based on the subject, academic level, preferred location, and schedule. This tutor matching process is commonly referred to as a tuition assignment, where we connect students with tutors who specialise in the subjects they need support with.
What happens after requesting for a home tutor?
Upon receiving your request, we will promptly update you within 24 hours with several suitable and detailed tutor profiles via WhatsApp. You can then choose the tutor you prefer.
During the selection process, if you need more information about the recommended tutors, our coordinators are available to assist you. You can even request to speak with the tutor directly through a private phone call for added assurance.
Once you are comfortable with your chosen tutor, we can help you set a start date right away. At Genius Mind, we strive to ensure that parents or students feel at ease when engaging with a private tutor in Singapore that you can trust.
What types of private tutors are available in Singapore?
Generally, there are 3 types of home tutors. They are:
Part-Time Tutors
These are mostly current university students who have scored very well in their previous major examinations. A younger group of tutors can be expected.
Full-Time Tutors
These are tutors who take up giving home tuition as their full-time profession. They are mostly university graduates with years of teaching experience.
Ex-/Current MOE Teachers
These tutors have experience teaching in Singapore schools and are familiar with the national curriculum and examination formats.
When choosing a tutor, parents often consider the student’s academic level, learning pace, and the type of guidance required. Younger students in particular may benefit from more structured support as they build their academic foundations and study habits. In such cases, families may look for a primary school tutor who specialises in guiding students through the early years of the MOE curriculum.
Are there any additional charges or fees?
Our matching service is free for students and parents, and you do not need to make any advance payments. You only pay based on the mutually agreed hourly rate for lessons delivered by the tutor.
Our agency fee is charged to our tutors, and you may be required to make initial payments to Genius Mind for the first few lessons, with clear payment details provided when confirming a tutor engagement.
In short, you are only required to pay for the lessons at the agreed hourly rate. No additional fees are required. Parents comparing options often look at our tuition rates in Singapore to better understand the typical range of home tuition fees.
How do parents usually pay for private tuition in Singapore?
You may choose to pay the confirmed tutors in cash, cheque, via bank transfer, PayNow, or PayLah!, depending on your agreement.
Our agency fee is charged to our tutors, and to facilitate the collection of agency fees, we kindly request your cooperation to make payment for the first few lessons (50% of the first 4 weeks) directly to Genius Mind.
Afterward, you can make payments directly to the tutors for the remaining lessons, with clear payment details and methods communicated to you upon confirming the tutor engagement.
As payment structures can vary depending on the tutor’s experience and the student’s academic level, many parents also compare rates for tuition in Singapore to better understand typical lesson fees before confirming a tutor arrangement.
Can I terminate the tuition or request for a change of tutor?
Absolutely. If you feel that the assigned tutor is not suitable or for any other reason you wish to discontinue the tuition, you can contact us.
As we follow a non-contractual obligation policy, there won’t be any additional charges incurred. In some cases, parents may request a change of tutor if they feel that another tutor would better match the student’s learning pace, subject needs, or preferred teaching style. This tends to happen more often when students progress into secondary school, where subjects become more specialised and exam preparation becomes increasingly important.
For example, students preparing for subjects like Additional Mathematics or Pure Sciences, or working towards their O-Level examinations, may benefit from a secondary tutor who is experienced in guiding them through these more advanced topics and assessment formats.
Can home tuition lessons be postponed or rescheduled?
Yes, lessons can be postponed if necessary. However, please inform both the assigned tutor and Genius Mind in advance so that we can arrange for a reschedule.
Genius Mind advises our tutors to avoid postponing lessons unless there is a valid reason, such as sudden illness or medical emergencies. We encourage tutors to notify parents at least 24 hours prior to the next lesson if there is a need to postpone, and to arrange a make-up lesson within the next 7 days.
We also encourage open communication between parents and tutors to establish a healthy scheduling system and reach a consensus on any postponement matters. Maintaining a consistent lesson schedule is particularly helpful for students preparing for major examinations, such as those attending PSLE math tuition, where regular practice and revision are important for building confidence and exam readiness.
Do I need to prepare any tuition material or will the tutor prepare it?
Usually during the first lesson, our tutors will assess the student academically. From there, they will suggest what kind of materials you may need to purchase.
If you already have tuition materials such as assessment books or worksheets, please show them to the tutor during the first lesson. Some tutors may also recommend additional practice resources, such as past-year questions or structured revision materials. Students can also make use of resources like our collection of free exam papers to practise commonly tested questions and reinforce their understanding of key topics.
Genius Mind strongly encourages both parents and tutors to communicate these expectations clearly beforehand to prevent misunderstandings. This is particularly important for subjects like mathematics, where the type of practice materials used can significantly influence how well students grasp problem-solving techniques and application-based questions. In many cases, a mathematics home tutor may recommend specific worksheets, assessment books, or exam-style questions to ensure that the learning materials align with the student’s syllabus and current level of understanding.
